Manufacturing Capabilities Manager

Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware, and equipment to be a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data, and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments, and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of Position:
Develop and execute deployment of the OCS Manufacturing Capabilities such as Performance Excellence (PEx), Lean, and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) b) Drive continuous improvement into all OCS manufacturing locations through the integration of varied PEx, Lean, and TPM philosophies, concepts, and tools focused on achieving excellence in manufacturing processes.

Major Roles and Responsibilities:
• Establish manufacturing capability strategies and drive deployment that align with OCS Business initiatives
• Capability strategies should include rollout to all facilities, mechanism for tracking to improvement targets, and ongoing communication with division leadership.
• Create and facilitate Division wide network(s) of Plant Capability Champions
• Coach plant champions in site assessments, specific methodology usage, and deployment plan development and execution.
• Facilitate network(s) to enable rapid deployment to all manufacturing locations, focused on deploying best practices globally.
• Work with champions to identify and execute transformational projects aimed at meeting business objectives.
• Provide Manufacturing Capability training programs as appropriate for all levels of the OCS operational organization
• Provide informal coaching and mentoring to division engineering leaders and site leadership on Manufacturing Capabilities to ensure consistency of approach.
• Work with senior leadership and Corporate network to ensure synergy with business priorities and corporate models

Complex decisions indicative of this function and its impact:
• The manufacturing capabilities will drive continuous improvement in Quality, Cost and Delivery across the division. The pace and sustainability of deployment will impact the short term and long-term profit of the division.
• As the company expert for manufacturing capabilities, this position will be looked at to provide guidance and validation of decisions to make major manufacturing changes, often during times when there is heavy workload. An incorrect decision can have a significant impact on plant throughput and customer service. A correct decision can yield millions of dollars in cost reduction, margins from increased revenue, and improved delivery with reduced inventories.

Personnel Directed:
• Up to 8 direct reports that serve as global capability champions
• Personnel will be distributed globally.

Minimum Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
• Bachelor of Science or Engineering Degree or higher in relevant discipline
• At least 10 years of experience in manufacturing, with experience in at least two of the following: Production, manufacturing or process engineering, maintenance quality, and Supply Chain
• Extensive working knowledge of quality, engineering, and manufacturing systems including Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodology with demonstrated track record of manufacturing, quality system and process improvements
• Ability to lead change through influencing others in thinking differently and achieve acceptance of new paradigms
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and influencing skills and capable of coaching and mentoring others in technical and system understanding
• High degree of initiative; able to work with ambiguity and with minimal direction
• Excellent team work and leadership skills
• Good organizational and planning skills
